Every clip, regardless of length or platform, is defined by the same handful of parts. Understanding them makes every other section of this guide easier to follow.

Clipping, at its core, is choosing two points on a timeline and keeping what's between them. Everything else - the platform you're posting to, the software you're using, whether it's lossless or re-encoded - is a detail layered on top of that one idea.

The complexity people run into almost always traces back to one of two things: where the cut is allowed to land (frame-accurate re-encoding vs. keyframe-locked lossless cutting) and what the output needs to become (a file, a link, a specific aspect ratio). The different kinds of "a clip"

People use the word "clip" for at least six distinct things. Knowing which one you're making changes how you should cut it.

Highlight clip

One self-contained moment pulled from something longer - a punchline, a strong claim, a clean answer. Needs to make sense with zero context.

How to cut a clip, practically

Terminology, plainly defined

The words that show up constantly around clipping, without the jargon.

In point / out point
The exact frames a clip starts and ends on. Everything between them is what gets exported.
Keyframe
A fully stored frame in a compressed video. Frames between keyframes are stored as differences, which is why lossless cuts can only land on keyframes.
Stream copy
Cutting without re-encoding - instant and lossless, but the cut snaps to the nearest keyframe rather than your exact mark.
Re-encode
Rebuilding the video data during export, which allows a frame-exact cut at the cost of a small amount of time and one generation of compression.
Container
The file format wrapping video and audio together - MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV. Distinct from the codec inside it.
Codec
The compression method used inside a container - H.264 and H.265 for MP4, VP9 for WebM. Two files can share a container and use different codecs.
Aspect ratio
The width-to-height shape of the frame - 16:9 (horizontal), 9:16 (vertical), 1:1 (square). Cutting doesn't change this; cropping does.
Reframe / crop
Changing the aspect ratio by cutting away part of the frame, often to convert horizontal footage to vertical for social platforms.
Bitrate
How much data is used per second of video. Higher bitrate generally means better quality and a larger file.
Timestamped link
A URL that opens a video already positioned at a specific point, e.g. a YouTube link ending in ?t=90.
Auto-stopping embed
An embedded player with both a start and end time set, so playback halts automatically at the out point - only possible with embeds, not plain share links.
Trim
Removing footage from the start and/or end of a recording. Often used loosely to mean the same thing as "clip" or "cut."

Mistakes that ruin an otherwise good clip

Most bad clips aren't badly chosen - they're badly cut.

Mistake 01

Cutting on the word instead of before it

Starting exactly on the first syllable clips its leading edge and sounds abrupt. Start a few frames earlier, in the silence just before the word begins.

Mistake 02

Leaving dead air at the end

A pause after the payoff reads as padding, not a breath. End right as the last word or the laugh finishes - not after the silence that follows it.

Mistake 03

Trusting the eye over the ear

Dragging handles by looking at the waveform gets you close. Actually playing the preview and listening is the only way to catch a cut that looks right but sounds wrong.

Mistake 04

Assuming a clip needs no reframing

A horizontal source cropped straight to vertical often cuts off the subject. Check the framing after any aspect-ratio change, not just the timing.

Mistake 05

Forgetting the clip needs no context

A cut that only makes sense if you already watched what came before it isn't a clip yet - it's an excerpt. Check it plays clearly cold, with no prior knowledge assumed.

Assuming stream-copy cuts are frame-exact

Lossless cutting is fast but can only land on keyframes, which are often a second or more apart. If the exact frame matters, re-encode instead.

What's the difference between clipping, trimming, and cutting?

In casual use they're interchangeable. If there's a technical distinction: trimming usually means removing dead space from the start or end; clipping or cutting means extracting a specific span, which could be anywhere including the middle.

What is an "in point" and "out point"?

The exact frame where a clip begins (in point) and ends (out point). Together they define the clip's duration - everything between them is what gets exported, and everything outside them is discarded.

Why can't lossless cutting land on my exact frame?

Lossless cutting (stream copy) works by copying compressed data directly without decoding it, which only allows cuts at keyframes - full stored frames spaced a second or more apart. Landing on any other frame requires re-encoding, which is slower but frame-exact.

What's the difference between a container and a codec?

A container (MP4, WebM, MOV) is the file format wrapping the data together. A codec (H.264, VP9) is how the video inside is compressed. The same container can hold different codecs, which is why "is this an MP4" doesn't fully answer "will this play."

How long should a clip be?

It depends entirely on the destination. Under 60 seconds fits nearly every social platform's sweet spot. For a reference clip or documentation, length should match what the content actually needs, not a platform limit.

What's the difference between a highlight clip and a teaser?

A highlight clip is self-contained - it delivers the full moment and makes sense on its own. A teaser is deliberately incomplete, designed to create curiosity about the full video rather than satisfy on its own.

Does cutting a video reduce its quality?

Only if the cut re-encodes, which introduces one generation of compression - usually invisible at a reasonable bitrate. A stream-copy (lossless) cut introduces no quality loss at all, at the cost of landing on the nearest keyframe rather than your exact mark.

What does "reframing" mean?

Changing a video's aspect ratio, usually by cropping - for example converting 16:9 horizontal footage to 9:16 vertical for social platforms. It's a separate operation from cutting a clip's length and isn't something time-based clipping tools do automatically.

Why is my exported clip a WebM instead of MP4?

Browsers can decode MP4 but can only natively encode WebM - producing MP4 in-browser would require a server or a heavy conversion library. Converting afterward takes one step: ffmpeg -i clip.webm -c:a aac clip.mp4.

What's a timestamped link vs an auto-stopping embed?

A timestamped link (like youtu.be/ID?t=90) opens a video already positioned at that point but keeps playing afterward. An auto-stopping embed has both a start and end time, so playback halts automatically - only possible inside an embed, not a plain share link.

How precise can a video clip be?

With frame-accurate tools, you can mark to the millisecond and nudge by single frames, landing within roughly 33–42 ms of your intended point depending on frame rate. Lossless keyframe-based cuts are limited to the nearest keyframe instead.

What makes a clip "good" beyond just being the right length?

Can I clip video from a URL instead of a downloaded file?

Is it legal to clip a video?

Do I need to watch the whole source video before clipping it?
